Postdoctoral

Department: Medicine/Genetics

Salary Range: Dependent on Qualifications

Our laboratory within the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology seeks a motivated and talented Postdoctoral Research Associate to join our team. Our lab focuses on understanding the biological events responsible for dynamically regulating the selective expression of the mammalian genome in the context on immune responses in the intestine. The lab is positioned at the interface between immunology, molecular biology and utilizes new high throughput genome wide tools to visualize changes in chromatin structure and function in human cells and animal models.

Educational Requirements:

Candidates must have a strong academic track record, work well in a goal-oriented team setting, and have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Additionally, candidates must have a PhD, PharmD, and/or MD degree by appointment date.

Qualifications and Experience:

Experience with mammalian cell culture, basic biochemical and molecular biology techniques are required. Background in computational biology is preferred. Experience in chromatin biology will be an advantage to the applicant.

Special Instructions

Please apply by emailing sheisx@med.unc.edu and include a cover letter expressing your interest in the lab, CV, and names and contact details of three references. The cover letter should detail what date you would be available to begin this new position.

Special Physical and Mental Requirements

Must comply with all environmental health and safety rules including proper use of personal protective equipment.

Graduate Students

We enthusiastically welcome interested students at UNC to visit and rotate in our lab to learn about current research opportunities and our multidisciplinary approach to understanding chromatin biology in the context of host-microbial interactions in the intestines in health and disease. Students will be co-mentored in computational biology under Dr. Terry Furey. Assistant Professor in the Department of Genetics (http://fureylab.web.unc.edu).

Undergraduates

Undergraduate students at UNC can join our lab and earn academic credit. We expect undergraduates to devote a minimum of 12 hours per week to research and thinking in our lab. Rising sophomores or juniors should email Dr. Sheikh a cover letter and a brief CV and should arrange for two letters of recommendation to be forwarded to Dr. Sheikh from professors or graduate student teaching assistants.
